It's May, it's Cass, and it's......sunny??? With this latest trip in May of 2014, I've now been to Cass a total of 8 times. Up until now, the weather has been the most consistent of any of the railroads I've visited. It has rained every time....sometimes it has absolutely poured. I've gotten used to the fact that you have to pack rain gear for yourself and your equipment if you want to shoot Cass. I actually look forward to it now. Hey, rainy days and Shays just go together. So in May of 2014, when I awoke one morning to find glorious sunshine, I almost didn't know what to do with it. Clearly nobody else expected it either, because when I hustled down to the water tank to catch the crews watering the engines, none of the nearly 200 other photographers attending the annual railfan event were anywhere to be seen. In the space of 15 minutes, I snapped more sunny shots than I had in all of the previous 7 trips combined and the early morning light was just glorious. I definitely scored! I guess it is finally time for me to retire my old saying: "It's May, it's Cass, and it's raining."
For aficianados of geared steam engines, it's "almost heaven." Here are some scenes from the park's annual Railfan Weekends, as well as some private charters.
