For many decades semaphore signals such as these guided some of the nation’s most historic passenger trains across the country. Fast forward to 2013 and this group of semaphore signals in the high desert of northern New Mexico is the only large group of these signals still in use today as they signal block occupancy for the daily passage of the east and westbound Amtrak Southwest Chief. About 30,000 feet overhead a Delta Air Lines Boeing 757 enroute from Las Vegas to Atlanta marks the dramatic changes in United States passenger travel from when these semaphore signals were first installed.
