Built in October 1919 by the Lima Locomotive Works, this “war baby” would go to work for the Frisco transporting freight between Bessemer and Birmingham. Avoiding the scrap yard, it was given to the Magic City by the Frisco on May 29, 1952 and put on display at the city fairgrounds. With a major redevelopment of the fairgrounds about to being in 2009, this “little engine that could” once again averted the scrapper’s torch and was moved to the Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark where it received a new coat of paint and some much deserved TLC.
