Southbound Amtrak No. 81, the "Silver Star," had already made its stop at Broad Street Station, exited the loop, and was running north on the RF&P before heading back south on the SCL at South AY interlocking in Richmond, VA. This consist was the typical hodgepodge of the time with engines lettered for Amtrak, RF&P and UP and a train made of of cars from numerous roads. The 11 car consist seems kind of unusual. No. 81 normally ran 16 to 18 cars at the time.
