Remarks & Notes |
The B&O Memnon No. 57: The Memmon was built in 1848 by the New Castle Manufacturing Company in Delaware on a sub-contract from the Baldwin Locomotive Works, B&O #57 entered service in July, 1848, was rebuilt in 1853 and ran until 1892. The "Memmon" was renumbered in 1884 to #13. This very engine was used to haul coal over the steep grades of the Allegheny Mountains and later pressed into service during the American Civil War. The "Memnon" is one of only a handful of surviving original locomotives from the 1840s. It is also the sole surviving Newcastle locomotive. |
