Remarks: The joint Southern/Norfolk & Western "Tennessean" heads north after its Lynchburg stop, passing in front of the lens of Charles Knox Freericks' Argus A Anistigmat. The train is being pulled by one of N&W's majestic J 4-8-4s. This was a Memphis to New York to train. To its left is a gantry crane. Above it is the Craddock-Terry Shoe Company factory.

Remarks: Brand new C30-7 #8035 leads two SD45s on an early morning eastbound manfiest along Santa Fe's Transcon. The hogger gives us a friendly wave, while my dad captures the moment on Plus-X Pan. Image is taken west of NM-109 Jarales Road crossing, just east of Belen Yard. The C30-7 was built in June of 1978, so only a month old here (she was retired Jan 1994 and scrapped Jul 1996). #5537 was built Oct 1966 and eventually went to the WC. #5513 dated from June 1966 and was scrapped in 1991.

Remarks: Southern Knoxville Division local mail train #4 from Knoxville arrives at its final destination(crossing State Street). The train has a single rider coach hidden by the two boxcars in the yard. The switchman is riding up to where F3 #4151 will be cut off. We are looking south towards the Norfolk & Western position light signal that allowed eastbounds to come into the depot. Delivered in January of 1947, #4151 was later rebuilt to F7 standards, to be retired in the 1969-73 era.

Remarks: The Sacramento Northern GP7 #712 leads Western Pacific's early morning APF, the "Auto Parts Forwarder" up to the Milpitas Wye. Behind the train is the large Ford plant, which was the lifeblood of the Western Pacific at that time. GP7 #712 was delivered to the Western Pacific in April of 1953. After retirement, it went to the Western Railway Museum in Niles, California. Later still, it was sent to the Western Pacific musuem in Portola, California, where it is located today.

Remarks: Kodak's grainy Tri-X Pan to the rescue, as it's after 8 PM at night when the SJT "San Jose Turn" makes an appearance in Milpitas after an ENTIRE DAY OF NO TRAINS along the WP San Jose Branch. Well, at least not that we had seen. The train is seen here north of Milpitas Yard. GP40 #3539 was delivered September 1971. This Stockton to Milpitas round trip was supposed to operate with the Final Four F units, but got second generation power for our one day seeing it. Taken with an Argus Cosina STL 1000 of the same vintage as the GP40.

Remarks: Built in 1906 by The Laconia Car Company (Laconia , NH), this 43' long convertible trolley seats 44. It is seen at the Shore Line Trolley Museum , which was founded in 1945 as the Branford Electric Railway Association. The tracks are the Branford Electric Railway (the oldest operating suburban trolley line in the US ), a portion of the old "F" trolley route of the Connecticut Company. Railpix contributor Charles J Freericks is on the pilot of the car, for which the now LA Dodgers were named (at one time the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers).

Remarks: Reading Brill Motor Car #4077 is seen in front of the grand three-story Victorian depot at Skillman, NJ. Just behind the "doodlebug" is the station's semaphore passenger controlled flag stop signal, used by passengers to request a train stop. Reading had a small fleet of doodlebugs working the New York Branch. #4077 was delivered by J.G. Brill in February of 1927. It was powered by a Cummins 250 H.P. diesel with a tractive effort of 10,100 lbs. It sat 32 in the passenger compartment and also had sections for parcel service and R.P.O.

Remarks: Moments after the Chessie Steam Special raced to Baltimore, a Septa PCC crossed the tracks with its oblivious passengers, passing straggler railfans. I have been told that this was the last trolley/railroad grade crossing in America, though it is now one of three. The pre-war air electric PCC is in SEPTA's 1970's "Gulf colors," which matched the Gulf gas stations of No Nox and Good Gulf fame. PCC #2042 is on Main Street, headed east on Route #11, inbound to City Hall along the oldest trolley route in Philadelphia. Delivered in 1940 by St. Louis Car, it was cut up in 1983 at Port Richmond scrap yard.

Remarks: The Train of Tomorrow visits CNJ's small LCL yard just east of the PRR crossing in Elizabeth NJ on its 86-city tour of the country. Behind it is the roof of the CNJ freighthouse. CKF was 12 when he took this image (probably with a Kodak Autographic Brownie Six-20). The E7(A) was gray/blue and silver, 2,000 horsepower, A1A-A1A, bulldog nosed, and built by LaGrange in April of 1947. E7s are the only engines that both my dad and I railfanned as kids.

Remarks: My dad (Charles Knox Freericks) took this picture of my brother and me (Charles Freericks - on the steps) on my favorite engine, Nickel Plate Road S2 Berkshire #759, which had returned to Steamtown after a few years in excursion service. This is the ultimate steam engine to me, and though I was ten, I have the most vivid memories of this day and learning about F. Nelson Blount. #759 was built in August of 1944 by Lima, it was part of NKP's third order of Berkshires. Overhauled by the NKP in Conneaut, Ohio in May of 1958, it was the last steamer overhauled as the next locomotive in line for overhaul was instead the first one to be scrapped.

Remarks: B23-7 #4680 is heading north, working the industries along Wetmore Road at San Antonio International Airport. This is North Loop Siding on the Missouri Pacific Austin Subdivision. Image was taken by CKF while working on a project in SA. B23-7 #4680 was part of MP's last order for the model and was delivered in April of 1981. Apperently the #219 refers to the Team Track or Station name, and is not a mile marker.

Remarks: Delaware & Hudson's NE-87 has a GP39-2/C420/GP39-2/C420/GP39-2 consist on this day. This was D&H's former Lehigh Valley Potomac Yard to Rigby Yard train. Here it is parked between JU Interlocking (the former site of JU Tower) and Steel Tower on Conrail's, ex Lehigh Valley, nee Jersey Central tracks. The two RDG GP39-2s were from 12/74. The two former LV C420s were from 12/64. And the final GP39-2 was a D&H orginal from 4/76.

Remarks: Train #45 "The Tennessean" is readied for departure. This train connected with a Pennsylvania train of the same name, then ran Southern to N&W and back to Southern. The Roanoke police officer sitting under the stairs was there to watch the crossing, especially for upscale Hotel Roanoke guests. Assuming the train's on time, it's about 1:30 PM. #45 left Washington DC at 8:00 am that morning and will arrive at Memphis at 7:15 am the next day. Is that a 1940 Chrysler crossing the plane?

Remarks: The Chessie Steam Special races south out of Philadlephia behind Reading T1 #2101. Staged in honor of the 1977 Sesquicentennial of the Baltimore & Ohio (founded in 1827), Ross Rowland's 4-8-4 toured the Chessie System in full Chessie System yellow, blue, and vermillion, and including Chessie, the sleepy C&O kitten. It was so successful during its 1977 season that the railroad decided to add a second year in 1978. Here it is returning from a one day Baltimore-Philadelphia-Baltimore round trip.

Remarks: N&W #46, "The Tennessean," slides over Jefferson Street crossing. To the right is the Norfolk & Western General Office Bldg, a 1951 Dodge and a circa 1941 Mack bus in the Safety Motor Transit scheme. The Tennessean ran Memphis to New York. J #608 was built by the Roanoke shops as an unstreamlined J1 in 1944. After the war it was streamlined and converted to a J, one of a total of 14 that N&W owned. Picture was taken on a round trip from Princeton NJ to Sardis MS.
