Remarks: B23-7 #4680 is heading north, working the industries along Wetmore Road at San Antonio International Airport. This is North Loop Siding on the Missouri Pacific Austin Subdivision. Image was taken by CKF while working on a project in SA. B23-7 #4680 was part of MP's last order for the model and was delivered in April of 1981. Apperently the #219 refers to the Team Track or Station name, and is not a mile marker.
Remarks: Delaware & Hudson's NE-87 has a GP39-2/C420/GP39-2/C420/GP39-2 consist on this day. This was D&H's former Lehigh Valley Potomac Yard to Rigby Yard train. Here it is parked between JU Interlocking (the former site of JU Tower) and Steel Tower on Conrail's, ex Lehigh Valley, nee Jersey Central tracks. The two RDG GP39-2s were from 12/74. The two former LV C420s were from 12/64. And the final GP39-2 was a D&H orginal from 4/76.
Remarks: Train #45 "The Tennessean" is readied for departure. This train connected with a Pennsylvania train of the same name, then ran Southern to N&W and back to Southern. The Roanoke police officer sitting under the stairs was there to watch the crossing, especially for upscale Hotel Roanoke guests. Assuming the train's on time, it's about 1:30 PM. #45 left Washington DC at 8:00 am that morning and will arrive at Memphis at 7:15 am the next day. Is that a 1940 Chrysler crossing the plane?
Remarks: The Chessie Steam Special races south out of Philadlephia behind Reading T1 #2101. Staged in honor of the 1977 Sesquicentennial of the Baltimore & Ohio (founded in 1827), Ross Rowland's 4-8-4 toured the Chessie System in full Chessie System yellow, blue, and vermillion, and including Chessie, the sleepy C&O kitten. It was so successful during its 1977 season that the railroad decided to add a second year in 1978. Here it is returning from a one day Baltimore-Philadelphia-Baltimore round trip.
Remarks: N&W #46, "The Tennessean," slides over Jefferson Street crossing. To the right is the Norfolk & Western General Office Bldg, a 1951 Dodge and a circa 1941 Mack bus in the Safety Motor Transit scheme. The Tennessean ran Memphis to New York. J #608 was built by the Roanoke shops as an unstreamlined J1 in 1944. After the war it was streamlined and converted to a J, one of a total of 14 that N&W owned. Picture was taken on a round trip from Princeton NJ to Sardis MS.
