Remarks: ROCK ISLAND Recollections. RI 4584 is less than two months old in this photo at HB&T's Milby St. diesel facility in Houston. RI's 18 U30Cs 4582-4599 were delivered October-December 1973 in the red and yellow speed-lettered ROCK ISLAND scheme; and originally carried the GE XR SERIES stencil on the frame adjacent to the GE builder's plate near the front 'F' on the Conductor's side. RI's U30Cs were some of GE's "EXtra Reliable" internal upgrades to it's U30 line. The Rock Island was no longer an operating railroad after March 31, 1980; and it's U30Cs were returned to lessor North American Car but never ran again and were eventually scrapped. See my photo of RI F9Ms 4153-4150 also in the red and yellow speed-lettered ROCK ISLAND paint scheme.

Remarks: Land Barge - one of C&NW's lengthy and lumbering freight trains. This eastbound 482 train, strung out across the horizon, was tied-down at this grade crossing just west of the Waseca yard. The motive power consist is seven units: C425 404-RS slug BU41-C425 402-GP7-RS32-SD18-RS32. CNW's four C425s 401-404 were the last C425s built with 50% of them shown here. They were configured as two C425/RS slug (converted RS3)/C425 sets operating on the "ALCO Line" between Huron, SD and Winona, MN at this time. The CNW C425s were transferred to Escanaba, MI later in the year. This photo appears in the book "DAKOTA, MINNESOTA & EASTERN A Modern Granger Railroad" by Andy Cummings and Jerry Huddleston published in 2005.

Remarks: BNSF SWBLW 1460, Santa Fe's one-of-a-kind Baldwin VO-1000 rebuild 'BEEP', was retired after almost forty years of service on the Santa Fe and BNSF and donated to the Western America Railroad Museum in Barstow, CA. ATSF 2450 was its original number when released from remanufacturing at Santa Fe's Cleburne Texas shops in December 1970. During the early 1970s it was leased to the Port Terminal Railroad Association (PTRA) in Houston, TX. The 'BEEP' was renumbered ATSF 1160 in August 1974, then to ATSF 1460 in January 1977; and it kept that same number into the BNSF era until retirement. In this photo of ATSF 2450, it is still bearing its original round Baldwin builder's plate which is visible on the side frame just ahead of the designated front 'F'.

Remarks: First Revenue Run in new BN paint scheme. MNTX 6234 is ready to make its first revenue run of the season from the Osceola, WI depot. Both MNTX 6234 and MNTX GP7 559 pulled the train today. The mail crane with the station name Osceola is left of the main track. The former Soo Line depot was built in 1916 and has been completely restored. The semaphore signal does not govern. See my roster photo of BN 6234 with its new "Cascade" Green paint after returning from WSOR's Horicon paint shop last December.
