A southbound freight (314 or 336 if memory serves) passes Union Station just after leaving S&NA Yard, the L&N facility shared by SCL after they closed their own Montgomery yard in the 1960s. I can't remember if Amtrak had already left town, or if the dispatcher is sending this train out first so that he can get a little way down the line toward Dothan before he has to get out of the way of the Floridian.
Coal and steel don't go bad. This album features long, slow, heavy freight trains; drag freights, slop freights, dead freights, etc. Trains with lots of power, and lots of different cargo slogging along behind.
Photos taken in the Deep South--primarily Alabama and Georgia--from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Featured railroads include the ICG, the West Point Route, SCL, Southern, Frisco, and even KCS.
