The People Came Back. The Moynihan Train Hall was still the James A. Farley Post Office in midtown Manhattan on September 11, 2001 when the unthinkable happened. At that time, there was a feeling that business and residents would want to be in New York City. But over the coming years, the populations of both continued to increase to record levels. Looking to increase capacity as well as upgrade the travel experience, the Moynihan Train Hall concept came to fruition through the efforts of the Empire State Development Corporation, the MTA, and Amtrak to serve a new generation. Designed by the same firm as New York’s original Pennsylvania Station, McKim, Mead & White in the same Beaux-Arts style, the structure was built between 1911 and 1914. After the Postal Service rearranged its operations and several years of construction, on January 1, 2021 it opened its doors to commuters and has continued to improve ever since. On the night of September 11, 2021, 20 years after the terrible attacks, the 911 Tribute In Light is seen next to the station complementing the spirit of progress while respecting history.
A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
