BNSF Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal train BNSF Z-LACNWH3-25A (Los Angeles CA to North Baltimore OH), behind BNSF ES44C4 8023, grinds upgrade as it begins its assault on Cajon Pass. Here at Keenbrook, in the lower reaches of Cajon, it meets BNSF train Z-LPKLAC6-22A, which originated at Logistics Park Kansas City KS and is headed to Los Angeles CA. This westbound has an interesting consist: BNSF ET44C4 3811, Dash 9-44CW 5189, ES44C4 8085, ES44Ac 6084 … and, dead-in-train, AT&SF SD45-2 5704, on its first trip out of Kansas City after being beautifully restored by that city’s Mid America Car. This engine, resplendent in its restored mid-70s Bicentennial paint, is ultimately bound for the California Southern Railroad Museum in Perris, California. But first it has to get to the BNSF’s engine facility in Commerce, a bit southeast of downtown Los Angeles, where it will be stored until trackage is restored to the museum and this diesel can be delivered. Fun Fact: The train hauling ATSF 5704 has, as its conductor, a gentleman who hired out on the Santa Fe in April 1974, when the Railway’s five Bicentennial SD45-2s (5700-5704) were leading the hot Super C piggyback train every day. I hope seeing this special locomotive on his train when he boarded it in Needles the previous evening brought back fond memories for him!
