I often hear, "Amtrak should have used P42 #50 as a 50th Anniversary unit." While that would have been nice, timing didn't work out. Here it is nearly 2 years ago in for overhaul and paint, an event that is budgeted and scheduled for based on the changing needs of the fleet. Using locomotives already in line for paint allowed Amtrak to celebrate the 50th in a fiscally responsible way. The final 50th unit is nearing completion and will be rolling out soon.
