Amtrak's Acela Express rounds the super-elevated curve on the express track through Claymont station in Delaware. Sometime in 2020.... make that 2022, this station will be replaced with the Claymont Regional Transportation Center located off the curve 1⁄2 mile north of the current station at the former site of Evraz Claymont Steel. Plans for the development, called First State Crossing, have evolved significantly since the St. Louis-based CDC bought the former steel mill in 2015. The latest concept includes 3.27 million square feet of new construction, breaking down to 1.8 million for residential in 1,207 units, 989,000 in seven office buildings, 380,000 in three industrial buildings and 105,000 in six retail buildings.
Amtrak's Northeast Corridor cuts across the northern end of Delaware. Go to the cafe car for a coffee and you might miss it. The state may be small but among Acelas, regional trains and long distance there is plenty of action.
