Chicago and Northwestern GP7 1634 with a southbound freight at Washburn WI May 1970. The Ashland wayfreight operated as a local out of Spooner, through Hayward and up to Ashland with runs to Washburn or Bayfield on an as needed basis. This local usually ran as a two day trip due to 10MPH on nearly the entire line. In the mid 70s, this job ran on weekends with power being sent down from Itasca on friday afternoons. Power was usually a geep and sometimes a BU booster unit slug was added. The CNW filed for abandonment on everything north of Hayward in 1975 and by the early 80s the line was torn out. Photos of this CNW job are few and far between. Original Slide from my Collection, No Photographer Listed.
