One of the cool things about the Spike 150 celebration that may have been lost on many attendees is that all of the original spikes were back in Utah during May. A special display room was set-up in Utah's beautiful Capitol Building, located on a bluff, overlooking Salt Lake City. In that room were some very cool things for those who took the time and had the interest to visit. Aside from the original, no-kidding gold, silver and iron spikes, was the original charter for the Pacific Railroad, signed by Abraham Lincoln. Seeing that signature just 6" away from my eyes was a quite a moment. In addition, they had a section of the original, last rail, the ceremonial silver spike maul, Gen. Grenville Dodge's personal Winchester Rifle and a number of other artifacts. Unfortunately, I have no photos of any of these items. I had been warned in advance not to bring my camera and to refrain from reaching for my cell phone while in the exhibit room, for there was a strict ban on photography, mostly related to the Pacific Railroad Charter document and concerns over the use of flash. Sure enough, when I walked into the room, I was immediately eyed and followed by a big, burly State Trooper, who watched me like a hawk the entire time. No matter, that exhibit was just plain cool, and I feel for any true railroad enthusiast who didn't make to the the Capitol Building to see all of those artifacts perhaps the one time when they will all be together.
