| Chicago and North Western’s entry into Powder River Basin in the early 1980’s left the railroad needing more motive power. It picked up 63 former Pennsylvania EMD SD45s just off lease from Conrail in 1982-83. The locomotives were quickly patched and renumbered, and many operated for a while in Conrail blue and Penn Central black. On a cold December night in 1983, former Conrail SD45 No. 6527 sits under the sand tower at the Butler Yard locomotive facility in Butler, Wisconsin. |
