With locomotives from four railway and destined for the Valero refinery at St-Romuald, Canadian National oil train #710 crosses the Richelieu River at Beloeil. In the evening of June 29th, 1864, a passenger train plunged through the open swing span, resulting in the loss of 100 lives of passenger and crew. The train was carrying German immigrants from near Quebec City to Montreal. To date, this remains the deadliest passenger train wreck in Canada.
