Remarks & Notes |
Portrait of a working steam locomotive. DRGW #484 runs light in the Chama yard in the beautiful, late afternoon light. Most surviving steam locomotives are transplants to the lines they ply today. They typically don't run every day and they aren't worked particularly hard. None of this applies to the machine you see here. The 484 and her three K-36 sisters on the Cumbres & Toltec remain on home rails after 85 years of nearly continuous hard work. In fact, as they pull heavy passenger trains up through Cumbres Pass on a daily basis, it is arguable that these locomotives are working just as hard today as they ever did during the heyday of steam. |
