On January 26, 2026, New York & Atlantic Railway EMD GP38-2s #261 and #271 (on long term lease from LIRR), along with an engineer, assisted with snow plowing operations on the Long Island Rail Road Main Line between KO (Ronkonkoma, NY) and GY (Greenport, NY) during Winter Storm Fern. Under normal operations, NYA typically runs only as far as the east switch at the LD block limit in Riverhead, though crews are qualified all the way to Greenport. This move marked one of only a handful of times in recent years that NYA has operated east of Riverhead. In this photo, the lite power, crewed by an NYA engineer and an LIRR conductor pilot, idles at Greenport station during a short layover as a public works truck finishes up plowing the parking lot.
