Amtrak Pacific Surfliner 582 arrived at the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center on time, but departed 25 minutes late because the mainline was closed several miles to the south, in Tustin, due to westbound Metrolink train 623 striking a person. Meanwhile, as the sun was setting, even though the rear of the train was stopped under the CA-57 Freeway, the light on the nose of Amtrak P42C cab car 9700 wasn’t too bad. The former P42DC locomotive (ex-AMTK 184) was taken out of service a few years ago, then rebuilt into a non-powered cab car.
Amtrak 9700 arrived in Los Angeles on January 19 to help the Surfliners, as their cab cars are having issues, and some of the other Non-Powered Control Units (ex-F40PHs) used in their place are also not operating due to issues. Reportedly, AMTK 9700 will return to the New York area when it is no longer needed in southern California.
