Smoking it up as it climbs the hills departing Mojave is an Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway westbound freight. This train is heading toward the Tehachapi Mountains, and then it will drop into California's San Joaquin Valley and, in Bakersfield, get off the Southern Pacific (which it just hopped onto at the southern end of Mojave) and back onto ATSF rails for its trip to the Bay Area. ATSF SD45 5611, SD45-2 5692, and GP35s 3411 and 3372 are the power for this train. (Mojave, California – December 2, 1979)
