| Remarks & Notes |
| For a brief while the Winchester & Western Virginia Division started to look something like the Chicago Central (with painted units) as heavy cement traffic from the Martinsburg plant found its way to the railroad.
Pretty much every geep on hand was needed to the move the 86 to Hagerstown, particularly the Sunday afternoon runs. A trio of GP38-2s would arrive soon after and become the primary power for this run.
The cement traffic the WW began hauling formerly moved on CSX via its Frog Hollow branch but has moved to an NS routing after completion of a new connection to the WW.
This traffic moved to the WW after managment at the cement plant were considering rail shipping options and saw a Winchester & Western train go by. There was no connection to the plant at that time but it made the management pursue doing business with the WW and ultimately brought the railroad around 7,000 cars of new business.
So maybe "paint doesn't pay the bills" like many people in the industry say but I'd sure say it helps to at least have your company's name on the locomotives. |
