About to depart Los Angeles Union Station on the point of train 14, the northbound Coast Starlight, is Amtrak ALC-42 301. This locomotive, built by Siemens in March 2021, was painted for Amtrak’s 50th Anniversary in the same scheme that adorned E8A 4316, the first locomotive to wear Amtrak markings, albeit in a scheme that was not used upon any other locomotives … until now. Which is a shame, as I, and many others, thought it was a killer scheme. Amtrak 301 is teamed with ALC-42 345 for this trip from LA to Seattle. (Los Angeles, California – October 31, 2025)
