Amtrak's Pennsylvanian is an interesting case where one terminus lacks "protect" power. As a result, if the train breaks down in Pittsburgh, Amtrak often has to borrow a locomotive from Norfolk Southern, as was the case on August 29, 2025, when an increasingly uncommon Dash 9 led 42. In Harrisburg, where a "protect set" is staged, an ACS-64 electric took the Dash 9s place.
