Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751, the first 4-8-4 steam locomotive built for the Santa Fe, is rolled slowly down temporary track and out of Viaduct Park in San Bernardino, where it has resided since 1958, and back onto Santa Fe rails for the first time in years. This "Northern" locomotive was rolled forward off its display track, and then the temporary track was pulled across West Third Street and into the old Santa Fe station's parking lot, allowing the locomotive to be backed onto Santa Fe rails once again, for the first time in 28 years. It was then towed westward 13 or so miles to Fontana, where it was placed in the California Steel Industries (formerly Kaiser Steel) mill, where the members of the San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society spent countless hours restoring it. After its extensive restoration, this locomotive pulled its first excursion train on December 27, 1991, the first of a four-day trip from Los Angeles across Cajon Pass to Barstow, then the next day across the Tehachapi Mountains to Bakersfield, and two days operating the opposite way. It ran flawlessly! (San Bernardino, California – April 30, 1986)
