A very unique landscape. The landscape between the US/Canada Border at White Pass and the Canadian Customs Station at Fraser, BC is one of the most unique that you'll see at any tourist railroad. Scoured by glaciers over many centuries, the terrain here is rocky and rough, dotted by small, pristine lakes, and devoid of any significant vegetation. When covered with snow in the winter, it is popular with cross-country skiers and snowmobilers, but in the summer, it is difficult to traverse, except by train. In this view, from the last day of our 5-day photo shoot on the White Pass & Yukon, we finally get to see the beautiful Mikado #73 with her train, under mostly clear skies and the stark beauty of this place, with its snow-capped mountains, is on full display.
This particular image was captured in the Fraser Meadows section of the line, at Milepost 23.8, about 4 miles south of Fraser Station. The little tank seen on the far right is a railroad-related structure, but it is not a water tank. Rather, it is a fuel tank that is used in the spring to refuel bulldozers that are used to clear the winter snows off the tracks.
