Classic White Pass power at Fraser, BC. While a work train holds the siding, a White Pass & Yukon passenger train charges north past the station area in Fraser, BC (MP 27.7), home of Canadian Customs. Pictured here on the left is the last steam locomotive still in service on the line, that being the 1947 Baldwin Mikado #73. On the siding, a pair of GE, 90-Class cab units have a work train in tow. Both the steam and diesel power seen here are perhaps the most iconic locomotives ever to work this railroad.
This image was captured during a September 2025 photo shoot on Alaska's White Pass & Yukon Route, which featured the Baldwin Steam Locomotive #73. In this case, the "work train" pictured here is actually the pair of 90-Class Locomotives that were used to "diesel-drag" our steam train between photo stops, saving valuable water and fuel for run-bys. Not only is the water tank pictured here not in service, but our work train also included a pair of water tank cars from which the 73 could water when needed. Doing steam photography on this entire 67-mile line is difficult logistically, as the railroad no longer has the infrastructure to support steam.
