“BNSF OCS @ Westchester Avenue”
On September 30th, 2025, the BNSF Railway Ryder Cup Special train sits under the abandoned NYW&B Westchester Avenue Station on the Hell Gate Line (Market Runner) in the Bronx borough of New York City. The train was on its way back to BNSF territory after a weeklong stay at Garden City, New York during the 2025 Ryder Cup PGA Championship at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course in Long Island. The train was forced to detour from its original routing, traveling from Long Island to CSX’s Selkirk Yard via the Fremont Secondary, Hell Gate Line, New Haven Line, Springfield Line, and Boston & Albany. This unusual move was necessary due to lingering clearance concerns with Metro-North Railroad’s underrunning third rail, despite modifications made to much of the 14-car consist.
Westchester Ave Station was designed by Cass Gilbert & completed using terra cotta detailing in 1908. Service ceased in 1937, but due to the way the station was constructed, it still remains today, suspended over Amtrak's Hell Gate Line.
