Remarks & Notes
A Combino tram trundles toward its next stop at Anger in the old city of Erfurt, passing St. Gregory's church and a statue of Martin Luther. Erfurt is the place where a young Luther, obedient to his father's wishes, enrolled in college to study law. After his "thunderstorm conversion," which took place several miles outside of the city, he made vows at the Augustinian monastery just a few blocks from this location. There, he studied theology and was ordained a priest. After several years, he would be appointed to teach at the university in Wittenberg, and the rest, as they say, is history.
