Transcontinental Railroad. On Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern announced their intention to combine to create a transcontinental railroad with over 50,000 route miles in 43 states, touching both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This merger, subject to Surface Transportation Board and other regulatory approval, would also leave a total of four other Class I freight railroads and create pressure for further mergers to maintain competition with this new entity.
In this photo from June 1, 2018, Union Pacific Railroad operated an Office Car Special that visited the East Coast. Perhaps foreshadowing the future, UP 1943 (SD70AH) had a passing meet with NS 9813 at Croxton Yard in Jersey City, New Jersey.
