Converted California Cab Car.
Amtrak F40 NPCU no. 90278 is seen leading San Joaquin train 712 out of Oakland-Jack London Square Station, beginning its journey to Bakersfield. These non-powered control units were converted from retired F40 locomotives by removing the prime mover, traction motors, and other related components. The conversion also included the installation of roll-up baggage doors allowing them to be used as cab/baggage cars, earning them the affectionate nickname "cabbages."
