On the afternoon of April 5, 2025, Amtrak’s Bombardier HHPc Non-Powered Control Unit (NPCU) #9750 leads Qualification Extra Train 874 at New York Penn Station in New York City. Amtrak 9750 (ex-AMTK 90691, exx-AMTK 691, née AMTK 661) is one of a handful of Bombardier HHPc NPCU conversions that will be used on double-ended Northeast Regional and Keystone Service trains to help reduce the load on Amtrak’s powered locomotive fleet. The HHPc conversions include removed pantographs, a new Positive Train Control (PTC) package, and other minor modifications enabling them to serve as fully functional cab cars.
