Remarks & Notes
Double-Ended Empire. Passengers on Amtrak Empire Service train 235 were treated to an impressive sunset on the west side of the Hudson River as their train raced north a couple hours later than scheduled. From the shore the scene was a bit different, with the last rays of sunlight reflecting off the stainless steel carbodies while darkness fell over the land. Amtrak has begun operating Empire Service trains with bookended locomotives - in this case P32AC-DM no. 711 top and another P32 on the tail - which allows shorter turnaround times at New York as the trains can turn on the platform rather than needing to go around the loop at Sunnyside Yard. The downside is that there is less time to recover from delays, so delays for a southbound train will cascade into delays for the corresponding northbound train.
