Remarks & Notes |
Red Bluff & Pony This branch line constructed by the Butte Short Line, was built to haul precious metals out of mines near Pony and Red Bluff. Like many western railroad/mining ventures the traffic never materialized. The line followed Antelope Creek up a 2%+ grade to a broad plateau where the line met a stage coach stop at Harrison. The stage was popular for passengers heading to Virginia City. Harrison became a junction with a line splitting to Pony and Norris. By 1970 the tracks had all been pulled up as far as Harrison. The grain elevator at Harrison has kept the line intact since then, perhaps on borrowed time. Not many of these lightly trafficked branches still remain, being replaced by heavier trucks. The train here is dropping out of Harrison down the 2%+ grade |
