As the day's light is rapidly disappearing our chartered freight passes Apache Crossing and starts the final climb to Cumbres. The DRGW ran its last revenue freight over this line in 1968, and the C&TS has been a tourist railway for over half a century since then. But between the professional railway perserving the locomotves, infrastructure, and operating skills, and the volunteer Friends of the C&TS perserving the freight equipment , long trains like this can still be run occasionally, when enough fans can pool the funds to make it happen. It provides an extraordinary recreation of historic mountain steam railroading.
