After a five hour delay, Amtrak’s California Zephyr rockets west out of Truckee and heads towards the summit of Donner Pass. On the point is Amtrak 203, which is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Operation Lifesaver program.
Operation Lifesaver strives to prevent accidents around railroad tracks through rail safety education. In 2021, there were 2,146 collisions, 670 injuries and 234 fatalities at railroad crossings in the United States. Unfortunately, California led all states with 35 fatalities. See tracks? Think train!
