Remarks & Notes
DPs shove hard on the back of this loaded coal train bound for the Brice power plant at Terrell, NC. In a 2x2 DP setup, 4 GEs locomotives work these 108 loads as they begin the climb out of Elkhorn City, one of the hardest grades going south. This location is where the Clinchfield Railroad and the C&O Railroad changed ownership. The Clinchfield build 35 miles north from its northernmost terminal at the time, Dante, in 1912. This expansion would prove to be the most difficult and expense undertakings to reach the C&O. In 1915 the route was completed with 20 tunnels, 8 bridges, and 10 degree curves built to maintain a 1.5% grade.
