Passing the freight house. Just a few yards west of the East Ely Depot sits the Nevada Northern Railway's spacious freight house. Although much of the freight traffic on this railroad was copper ore, being hauled from nearby mines to smelters at McGill, in the early part of the 20th century, there was also considerable outside freight business. The mere size of this shed says that at least for a time, that business must have been lucrative. Fortunately, the freight shed has been maintained in the years since it shut down operationally and it is open most days for visitors to inspect. It also makes a great observation platform from which to watch yard activity. In this scene, we see the recently-restored Baldwin Consolidation #81, heading compass west through the East Ely Yard with a cut of freight cars, from the perspective inside the open portion of the freight shed.
