Remarks & Notes
Looking quite out of place from the eastern states its owner's trackage plies, two General Electric Norfolk Southern units are seen deep in the Mojave desert as they race through Ludlow on the point of a westbound New York City to Los Angeles stack train. Founded in 1882, Ludlow served as the southern end of the Tonopah & Tidewater Railroad and a watering stop for the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad. The Tonopah & Tidewater brought up borax from Death Valley for interchange with the Atlantic & Pacific. A little known fact is that while Ludlow was a watering stop for thirsty steam locomotives, there were no wells when the town was founded, so water had to be brought in from nearby Newberry Springs.
