It takes a lot of power to lift heavy trains over the Tehachapi Mountains, as evidenced by the nine locomotives needed to get this Santa Fe eastbound, led by F45 5903. Nine diesels from EMD’s factory in McCook, Illinois and General Electric’s factory in Erie, Pennsylvania, are on the head-end as the train crests the summit just east of downtown Tehachapi, California, on December 23, 1978. The models represented are, from front to rear, an F45, GP35, SD45, SD26, SD45, SD45, U33C, GP35 and GP35. And, yes, it sounded great!
