Eureka on the High Line. Regardless of what locomotive you're riding behind, one of the highlights of any excursion on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a trip across the High Line in Rockwood, CO, at about Milepost 469.6. Here, we see Eureka & Palisade #4, a special guest during Railfest 2010, as she tip-toes through the slow-order on the rock shelf above the Animas Gorge, making about as much smoke as she ever does. This ride is best taken in the cupola of the caboose, a seat which I was lucky enough to have this day. As the train chugs slowly around the horseshoe curve, there are short stretches just ahead of where you see the train here, where you literally can't see anything below the train, except for the Animas River, a few hundred feet below. It's awe-inspiring to think 19th Century engineers and workmen managed to carve out a route for a railroad in this place.
