Cold 'nuff for ya? With the morning temperature hovering around 9F, Bridgton & Saco River Railroad Locomotive #7 charges upgrade from the yard at Top of the Mountain toward Alna Center and points south, leading a double-headed, 13-car mixed train.
While the Maine, 2-foot Forney Locomotives seldom took part in double-headed operations, a scant few historic photos do reveal that on at least a couple of occasions, it did happen. The re-creation you see here was done as part of the Maine 2-Foot Grand Reunion, an event staged in January of 2020, by the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company & Museum, and the Wiscasset Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum, on the campus of the WW&F. Combining their collections, the museums were able to stage re-creations of trains from 4 historic Maine, narrow gauge railroads, including the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad, the Monson Railroad and the Wiscasset Waterville & Farmington Railway. The weather cooperated fabulously, with 2.5 days of out 3 featuring sunshine, extreme cold, and fresh snow, including a ton of snow in the trees. The biggest challenge we faced photographing this event? Staying warm, of course.
