Short-lived Southern 2-8-4 2716 crosses over the Rivanna River north of Charlottesville, Virginia. The ex-C&O Alco is on the return leg of an Alexandria – Charlottesville round trip.
The Van Swearingen Brothers standarized freight power for their railroads with nearly identical 2-8-4 Berkshires. Two of these engines are still in excursion service.
