1980 found me in eastern Nevada doing my usual geologic work. Equipment problems on the drilling rig gave me a couple of days of free time, so I spent some of it checking out the Nevada Northern Ry. The railroad was still a functioning outfit back then. I wandered around the yard and managed to get a personally guided tour of the car shop building and the roundhouse. Sometime during the day I walked around to the back of the car shop and encountered this derelict rotary snowplow. It is hard for me to imagine that the railroad ever had so much snow that a machine of this size and ability would be required, but here is visual proof. Fast forward to today and use the Railpictures search feature and see how this machine looks today. An amazing cosmetic restoration has taken place. The plow is still not fully operable, but can be pushed around in the yard and on nearby trackage by a locomotive. With enough money, the plow can be returned to full operation. Scanned from a color print.
