Any white-water rafting trip to West Virginia and the New River isn't complete without a side excursion to Thurmond. The National Park Service had just recently taken control of Thurmond during this visit in the spring of 1995. Luckily, the few NPS employees that were inspecting the buildings didn't really mind our being there.
This is almost certainly Amtrak train #50, The Cardinal. Since it is on the outside track, there are probably no passengers to pick up or drop off. The station is about 100 meters behind the camera.
Powerful members of Congress once helped this scenic state get levels of service not seen elsewhere. Now the Capitol Limited and Cardinal are all that remain.
