Remarks & Notes |
The railroad relocated this section of track around Shawmut in 1959 to reduce some of the curves from the original railroad that was constructed in 1879 by the SP of Arizona. The railroad drops down grade for around 18 miles thru the Sonora Desert from Estella to Gila Bend and that's why the railroad curves so much thru here to keep the grade constant.
One can really see the curves with the grade as this meet goes down here at Shawmut. 1st eastbound Z-train snakes off towards Estrella while this auto train cools his heels in the siding for almost 2 hours waiting on 3 total Z-trains to pass by. This is the Union Pacific's Gila Bend Subdivision that runs from Tucson, Arizona, to Yuma, Arizona.
