Remarks & Notes |
By 1959 diesels had replaced the J class 4-8-4's on Norfolk and Western passenger trains. The few J's that remained continued to earn revenue for the railroad by hauling freight and even powered locals and switched industries. Some of the J's ran with auxiliary water tenders to eliminate frequent water stops.
Thirty three years later I came as close to recreating a 1959 image as I ever will. 611 is on a westbound ferry move hauling a short freight just about to plunge into Roderfield Tunnel. Very little had changed on this part of the railroad in those 33 years and 611 looks right at home!
