Westbound Southern Freight. Shortly after leaving the Grand Junction Yard, a westbound Southern Freight slowly ambles across the South Chickamauga Creek Bridge toward downtown Chattanooga, in the late afternoon sun. The helper leading this afternoon is big Southern Mikado #4501, a 1911 Baldwin product, built for heavy freight service. This locomotive served the Southern Railway for 37 years, until 1948, when she was sold to the Kentucky and Tennessee Railway, where she operated in freight service for another 16 years. Since her "final" retirement in 1964, this locomotive has found new life as an excursion engine, first with Southern Railway and today, wtih the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga.
