Remarks & Notes |
Yucca at Goat Canyon - [Gorge Ride 2017 Series] -Yucca (Yucca whipplei) on the wall of Goat Canyon with the great wooden trestle in the background.
The tank car on the hillside is part of the gravity fed fire suppression system that was set up in the time of steam engines to protect the wooden trestle from errant embers.
Water was brought into the gorge by tank car from either Jacumba, or Dos Cabezas and pumped up the hill into the tank.
There are still pipes leading to the bridge from the tank on the ledge above and during the steam age, a wooden dormitory car was parked on the fire spur where the hopper car is in this picture for the care taker to live in while on duty at Goat Canyon. |
