Remarks & Notes
A railbus gets ready to depart the Seaside Amusement Park stop and make its way back to Norfolk's Union Station in this July 1937 photo. With a careful look some of the history of Norfolk Southern's line from Norfolk to Virginia Beach can be gleaned from this photo. Originally a steam powered line dating back to the 1880's, a water tank is still visible behind the railbus. Overhead, trolley wires tell of a recent past when the line was electrified. In 1935 gas powered railbuses offered a less expensive to maintain replacement for traction. Fast forward 80 years...the only thing left standing in this photo is the Cavalier Hotel, which can be seen at the far left. Built in 1927 and served by the railroad, it is currently undergoing an extensive renovation.
