The wrecked remains of Class 14E1, 14-102, at De Aar Depot. The locomotive was working the Blue Train and was involved in a head-on collision with the Trans Karoo (another passenger train) at Deelfontein (20km south west of De Aar) in October 2005. Despite many injuries, there was (thankfully) no loss of life. A signalling problem / failure was noted as the cause. On the 27th October 2005 at approximately 11.30pm the Blue Train, which was ahead of schedule, was stationary and waiting to be crossed by the slow moving Trans Karoo. The Trans Karoo was then apparently diverted onto the same track and the two collided head-on.
